I heard that Pakistanis rely on TV for their information because they cannot read. The content there is strictly monitored. There are channels here in the US that are entertainment passing as news (e.g. Fox News). We need a grassroots movement to either boycott or educate the MSM. They need to understand which side of their toast is buttered. This hospital has had these kinds of problems for years. All attempts to remedy the situation have failed. Nothing makes a difference.

Our problems are an elephant in the livingroom, but we are impotent to fix anything.

I don't like that feeling. This gives me insight into why people tune out current events. They feel impotent.

As a child of the '60s I'm not used to feeling that way. Then we felt we could make a difference.

Another incident added to my growing sense of frustration. My tube of toothpaste was confiscated at Indianapolis International. It was fine going through the checkpoint at LAX, but was evidently a real no-no at INDY. Why? Don't all the screeners follow the same rules? I'm thinking these processes are defined by people of modest intellect, and enforced by folks who settle for near minimum wage.

In fact that's the bottom line. We are delegating huge responsibilites to folks who are just not up to the task. They’re huge corporations, massive corporations, linked up with even bigger corporations. They sell audiences to other businesses, namely advertisers. So when you turn on the television set, CBS doesn’t make any money. They make money from the advertisers. You’re the product that they’re selling, and the same is true of the daily newspaper. They’re huge corporations, selling audiences, potential consumers, to other businesses, all linked up closely to the government, especially the big media. What picture of the world do you expect them to present? - Noam Chomsky, Sparrow Talks with Noam Chomsky
——————————-
“I deplore… the putrid state into which our newspapers have passed and the malignity, the vulgarity, and mendacious spirit of those who write for them… These ordures are rapidly depraving the public taste and lessening its relish for sound food. feed them opinion as if it was news.

PS
It just occurred to me that we've lost the distinction between opinion and truth. type='text'>Views from the right on the Hamdan case

I have read what several of the right wing blogs have to say about the SCOTUS decision on Hamdan (June 29th).

A common gripe is that the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 (DTA) forbade the Supreme Court from reviewing these cases, and that Article III, Section 2, of the Constitution allows Congress to restrict what the Supreme Court may or may not rule on.
here

SCOTUS rejected that argument on the grounds Hamdan was already pending when DTA was enacted, and unless DTA addressed existing cases explicitly, they were excluded from the act.
This was to avoid a more far reaching decision, that would have ruled whether Congress had inadvertently and unconstitutionally suspended the writ of habeas corpus via DTA.

Another argument is that the courts are second guessing the presidents reasonable interpretation of international law.
I believe the courts said (5 to 4) that the president's interpretation is unreasonable on the face of it. So I don't see any traction in that point.
I would hope that everybody agrees that the president is to be held accountable and is not omnipotent?

Attacks on the character of the five is not rational debate. Unfortunately some right wing blogger have nothing better to offer. You guys are emotional worm cans. Please, let you brain do at least some of the work.
here

Others seem to interpret the ruling as invalidating our war on Terror. That's a knee jerk panic reaction. Relax and do your homework.
here, here and here

And many see the ruling for what it is.
here and here

And special kudos here

I suggest the right wing join the left and celebrate this ruling, because it reinforces separation of powers and the rule of law. It is very narrow in scope... and even provides guidance to both Congress and Executive to remedy the situation lawfully.
If you are really wanting Bush to be dictator of America, then, and only then, this ruling would be a setback.

As for the left thinking Bush has been slapped down? No, I don't think so. Although it does reinforce the 2004 decision here that AUMF and Article II do not give Bush a blank check.

Also read Slate for an overview of blogger reactions.

A new enemy?

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a strongly worded dissent from Thursday's ruling and took the unusual step of reading part of it from the bench — something he had never done before in his 15 years. Examples of early modern terrorism are the Klu Klux Klan, which formed to try to dissuade reconstructionists after the Civil War, and the Young Bosnians, which had Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914, leading directly to the outbreak of World War One. It wasn't, however, until the 1960's that terrorism as we know it today came into prominence. The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), and other terrorist groups used attacks against civilian populations in an attempt to effect change for religious or ideological reasons. The most infamous incident of that time period occurred during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, when a Palestine terrorist organization held eleven Israeli athletes hostage, who were then killed along with the terrorists during a rescue attempt."
A Concise History of Terrorism

What are we fighting for?

The Republican talking point seems to be that Bush, as Commander in Chief, is free to fight the War on Terror any way he sees fit.

But what are we fighting for?

Is it solely to save Americans from another attack? A law is not binding when a president issues a separate statement saying he reserves the right to revise, interpret or disregard it on national security and constitutional grounds." more

"For the first five years of Bush's presidency, his legal claims attracted little attention in Congress or the media. Then, twice in recent months, Bush drew scrutiny after challenging new laws: a torture ban and a requirement that he give detailed reports to Congress about how he is using the Patriot Act." more

Only a lawyer could fully understand the signing statement below. Hardly conducive to transparent government.
Basically states (among other things) that "enemy combatants" detained on foreign soil have no due process rights.
President's Statement on Signing of H.R. 2863

"The first president to issue a signing statement was James Monroe.[2] Until the 1980s, with some exceptions, signing statements were generally triumphal, rhetorical, or political proclamations and went mostly unannounced. Until Ronald Reagan became President, only 75 statements had been issued. Reagan and his successors George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton made 247 signing statements between them. As of 2006, George W. Bush, the current President, has issued over 750 signing statements.
